In collaboration with Dr. Michael Pietila, FCCP, FACP, a pulmonologist at Yankton Medical Clinic, Reese and the Pulmonary Team also emphasize the importance of low-dose CT screening for lung cancer. Medicare Part B covers annual lung cancer screening with low-dose CT for individuals who meet the following criteria:

• Aged 50-77
• Asymptomatic (no signs or symptoms of lung cancer)
• A current smoker or have quit within the past 15 years
• Have a smoking history of at least 20 “pack years” (one pack per day for 20 years)
• Have an order from a doctor or healthcare provider

Private insurers generally follow similar guidelines, and patients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider for specifics regarding their plan. Patients who fall outside the typical guidelines but are considered at high risk may be eligible for the screening on a cash basis at Yankton Medical Clinic.
